THE PLAY

Britain, somewhere in the Midlands. 1950s. The post war generation.

Frustrated Jimmy Porter is fighting the world around him and attacking the people who love him. His love and rage combine to form a disconcerting mixture of a man.

The kitchen sink drama Look Back in Anger presents a manifestation of disagreement with the stagnation of everyday life. Disagreements around indifference and habit, tradition and inequality. Jimmy balances on the extreme edges of passion and hatred, emotions that fuel everyone but ultimately destroys him and everyone in his sphere. Osborne's seminal play finds a medicine for this quiescence through the manipulation of feelings, constant change of moods and brutal honesty.

THE PARTS

JIMMY PORTER (MALE, PLAYING AGE 25-30)
From a working class background, this character is an energetic, sensitive and emotionally tormented young man. Jimmy is a master of sarcasm and irony. There is a sadness about him too; he is a disturbing mixture of sincerity and malice, tenderness and cruelty. Jimmy is the champion of angry young men and this character requires an actor capable of playing a strong and powerful young man oscillating between extreme emotions. A great, substantial role for an ambitious and committed actor.

ALISON PORTER (FEMALE, PLAYING AGE 25-30)
Upper class, intelligent and educated, Alison is Jimmy’s wife. Alison is a young woman stubbornly surviving, and quietly fighting against, her husband’s verbal attacks and humiliations. Tortured character, easily manipulated and influenced. This is a large role.

CLIFF LEWIS (MALE, PLAYING AGE 25-30)
From a working class background, Cliff is a kind young man who is quietly and relentlessly working hard to achieve something in life and better himself. Cliff is often a silent spectator but has the ability to stabilise the oppositional forces and remain calm in times of chaos. A tragic character who is rarely following his own desires and aspirations and has little ability to put his needs first. This is a great role for a sensitive, nuanced actor.

HELENA CHARLES (FEMALE, PLAYING AGE 25-30)
From an upper-middle class background, Helena is an independent young woman with a strong sense of pride and dignity. Very sophisticated and emancipated, her moral compass is compromised by her feelings and emotions: while not tolerant of Jimmy's behaviour, she succumbs to his charm.
